STUDIO BBA TEAM LINKEDIN BONNIE BRIDGES PRINCIPAL | AIA A strategic, clear thinker, perceptive listener and creative dynamo, Bonnie leads Studio BBA with adaptability, energy and fearless optimism. Drawing on deep expertise in the skilled facilitation of decisions and processes, and an intuitive, analytic nature, she guides the studio’s atelier of designers in creating beautiful, enriching, successful spaces and buildings for their clients. Bonnie brings a keen awareness of place and purpose to her work, with an approach to the design process grounded in human experience, logic and thoughtful actions. This humanistic methodology took form during her graduate and doctoral research, which explored the relationship between being and building—through contemporary architectural theory and the study of phenomenology as interpreted and developed by Husserl and Heidegger, Kenneth Frampton, and Juhanni Palassma. Site-specificity and material simplicity are essential aesthetic principles in Bonnie’s work, informed by growing up in California and ten years in the Sonoran Desert. She was profoundly inspired by these landscapes—imprinting within her a fundamental experience of light and space. Actively involved in the civic realm and the greater architectural community, Bonnie is fueled by a deep, longstanding dedication to advancing the profession—through mentoring, teaching, advisory and Board roles. Bonnie founded the firm in 1992, preceded by working for award-winning firms in California and Arizona. - CLEVER HQ
SAN FRANCISCO CLEVER HQ SAN FRANCISCO Occupying a 1924 poured-in-place concrete building, Clever’s new offices span nearly 27,000 sq. ft. across 4 floors and a roof deck. Studio BBA was hired for a full range of interior architecture and design services to convert this former mannequin factory into a tech company headquarters. We made two main architectural moves: “the Clever wall’ and a new stair. The Clever wall is a 160-foot long, maple plywood cabinetry array that extends the length of the building, incorporating the reception desk, a standing-height meeting table, seating nooks, storage, display and freestanding furnishings. The new stair sits inside a chevron-shaped opening, featuring walnut perches at each floor to encourage ad hoc staff interaction and offer a casual, standing-height workspace alternative. Clever builds software for schools, which fueled a robust play on iconic scholastic environments as we selected and curated the furnishings, art and accessories. Working closely with our client, we themed over thirty meeting rooms, phone booths and lounges—from chemistry lab, to student union to Principal’s office—enriching the design with molecule-inspired light fixtures and carpet, and custom installations using vintage and new school supplies. - ARGONAUT
SAN FRANCISCO ARGONAUT SAN FRANCISCO When Argonaut, a SF based ad agency, decided to move their offices from the Avalon Ballroom (Nob Hill/Van Ness) to 140 New Montgomery, they were trading 30,000 SF of expansive, high ceilinged multi-floored space for 12,000 SF on a single floor in the coveted historic, Miller and Pflueger designed, Pacific Telephone and Telegraph building at 140 New Montgomery. After walking into the building’s restored-to-glory lobby, you arrive at the Argonaut office–immediately greeted with a 35-foot “fireplace”. An incredible part of this floor is the relationship it has to the historic facade; the main entrance’s 3-story leaded glass window crests on the floor fostering a necessity to engage with the original 1920’s architecture. The building’s history inspired our commitment to the history of the architecture, informing the detailing of the brick fireplace surround, lime paint finishes, antique mirrors, board and batten details, even in plan through symmetry, axis, and hierarchy. Given the hybird nature of the office (designed during the COVID pandemic), Argonaut experimented with design ideas that would encourage people to spend more time in the office; the Chief Creative Officer’s prompt was “to create the best hotel lobby that people love to work in”. The office is a place to host and entertain it’s staff and clients alike, with large meeting rooms fit for hybrid meetings, a variety of working surfaces –from laptop tables and lounge chairs, to library tables, the kitchen island with power at every stool, banquettes along the windows, and a computer lab with all the ergonomic bells and whistles. Rivaling the comforts of home and a few focused and intentional amenities, their office is buzzing with life and rebuilding their in-office culture with daily grind and after-hours events and parties. Each time we visit, we are energized by the hum of productivity and honored by their in-office presence in spite of their continued work-remote flexibility. - VALLEY
SAN FRANCISCO VALLEY SAN FRANCISCO We helped our clients realize their vision for this remodel within their budget, by focusing on a couple sweet spots. The outcome is a stunning, airy home that honors its 1910 Victorian identity while embodying the modern soul and eye of its style-conscious owners. Our design reflects the Japanese aesthetic ideals of beauty through simplicity, and intentional use of space. The material palette is accordingly limited and refined, with honed Carrera marble, pale grey custom cabinets, black steel and painted accents, and bleached and whitewashed red oak floors. The aforementioned sweet spots are the open kitchen and dining area. These spaces enjoy sweeping views of the Bay, gained by advising the client to remove a pair of ramshackle utility porches off the rear of the building. A new lower level required excavation and structural upgrades, adding a family hangout area, laundry and bathroom. The rest of the house enjoyed a renewal via modest but well executed refinishing and details. For energy efficiency and sustainability the building envelope was heavily insulated, enabling the house to be heated by a single, freestanding, high-efficiency gas fireplace in the dining room. We placed new operable windows and doors in strategic locations to provide passive cooling. The process of building this project was as delightful as the design phase. We were lucky to work with a small, experienced, craft-oriented construction team who had exquisite attention to detail and executed with a high level of refinement. - ASHBURY HEIGHTS HOUSE
SAN FRANCISCO ASHBURY HEIGHTS HOUSE SAN FRANCISCO This house is our third project for a very special Client. We did her first house when her twins were young, then designed another house when baby 3 arrived. Fast forward ten years, and the twins are in college and baby 3 is about to enter highschool. She asked us to create a 'grown up' bedroom for her with a walk in closet and en-suite bathroom along with an overall refined and more elegant refresh of the entire house. Perched on a hill in Ashbury Heights, the house is flooded with gorgeous daylight, filtered through the surrounding filigreed gardens. The neutral palette of whites and creams extend the lightness; dark teal accents (kitchen cabinets) and a black-stained oak floor anchor the palette to the earth. The main bath is a quiet sanctuary; hand-made vertical tiles and brass accessories provide a rich, pillowy feel for her daily bathing rituals. - WAXMAN'S
SAN FRANCISCO WAXMAN'S SAN FRANCISCO In conjunction with the renovation of Ghirardelli Square’s historic Mustard Building we were tasked with designing this 400-seat restaurant space, to be outfitted for the urban gourmet. The program featured an indoor-outdoor connection and open kitchen, with an overall purposeful, informal feel. In the studio, we tasked ourselves with reconnecting Ghirardelli to modern-day San Francisco in an authentic, relevant way. We all love the building’s original, rough beauty and favored elevating its aesthetic with respectful, subtle interventions. Two new glass storefront ‘porches’ were added on the north face—to extend the restaurant’s footprint and bring the vibrant, sophisticated bar scene into view, showcasing the original rustic brick as a backdrop. These porches open onto an adjacent plaza via a series of tall doors, under an existing deck, and were made to resemble similar vestibules added in a 1960’s renovation of Ghirardelli’s campus in keeping with historical preservation guidelines. The simple, elegant floor plan humanizes the enormity of the space by creating two dining rooms around a central kitchen, and tucking the back-of-house functions in an accessible but discreet area. The limited mix of neutral and local materials includes white oak floors stained to match the old factory floor, Heath tile, and beautiful walnut and cypress woods. Custom, utilitarian hardware was created to reference the landmark building’s history, setting and back-story.
