  • 28TH STREET | Studio BBA Architects | Studio BBA Architects

SAN FRANCISCO | Master List 28TH STREET SAN FRANCISCO This expanded home exuberantly expresses its owner’s artistic style, rooted in her passion for texture and pattern. A master of craft and color with a background in textiles, art and photo styling, she is also part of the Studio BBA family as our materials librarian. Designing her family’s home was a highly collaborative process that was deeply rewarding and inspiring. Located on a very steep street, the original structure was leaning downhill 14” along with its neighboring houses. To stabilize the home and make space for ground floor and under-deck additions, we embarked on an exciting process of careful demolition, shoring and pneumatic leveling to bring all the properties as close to level as humanly possible. The incrementally slow cranking of 1” per hour took an entire day. The interior is a balance of 1910 Victorian coziness and modern great room lifestyle. We completely transformed the main floor living spaces by removing a partition wall and adding a large exterior door to the new deck—achieving an expansive openness and bringing in tons more daylight. We were also able to add key functionality for the family, with a full bath on the main level and a new bath on the upper level. The latter is washed in gorgeous west light, and is a combination of simple luxury and kid-friendly utility. The whole house benefits from new radiant heating and passive cooling systems. The rear yard is equally transformed, featuring a deck with cedar wall of built-in seating/planting and pop-out for grill on the main level. The new lower level guest suite opens onto an intimate patio with dog shower and potting bench, and enjoys a connection to the stunning and unusually large garden. • ARGONAUT | Studio BBA Architects | Studio BBA Architects

SAN FRANCISCO | Master List ARGONAUT SAN FRANCISCO When Argonaut, a SF based ad agency, decided to move their offices from the Avalon Ballroom (Nob Hill/Van Ness) to 140 New Montgomery, they were trading 30,000 SF of expansive, high ceilinged multi-floored space for 12,000 SF on a single floor in the coveted historic, Miller and Pflueger designed, Pacific Telephone and Telegraph building at 140 New Montgomery. After walking into the building’s restored-to-glory lobby, you arrive at the Argonaut office–immediately greeted with a 35-foot “fireplace”. An incredible part of this floor is the relationship it has to the historic facade; the main entrance’s 3-story leaded glass window crests on the floor fostering a necessity to engage with the original 1920’s architecture. The building’s history inspired our commitment to the history of the architecture, informing the detailing of the brick fireplace surround, lime paint finishes, antique mirrors, board and batten details, even in plan through symmetry, axis, and hierarchy. Given the hybird nature of the office (designed during the COVID pandemic), Argonaut experimented with design ideas that would encourage people to spend more time in the office; the Chief Creative Officer’s prompt was “to create the best hotel lobby that people love to work in”. The office is a place to host and entertain it’s staff and clients alike, with large meeting rooms fit for hybrid meetings, a variety of working surfaces –from laptop tables and lounge chairs, to library tables, the kitchen island with power at every stool, banquettes along the windows, and a computer lab with all the ergonomic bells and whistles. Rivaling the comforts of home and a few focused and intentional amenities, their office is buzzing with life and rebuilding their in-office culture with daily grind and after-hours events and parties. Each time we visit, we are energized by the hum of productivity and honored by their in-office presence in spite of their continued work-remote flexibility. • SEBASTOPOL HOUSE | Studio BBA Architects | Studio BBA Architects

WEST SONOMA COUNTY | Master List SEBASTOPOL HOUSE WEST SONOMA COUNTY After a five year search up and down the bay, the clients purchased this "shack with a view" on 2.7 acres in West Sonoma County. The 1,300 SF 1978 Sea Ranch inspired existing house had not been touched and the steeply sloping site was an open canvas with the exception of 8 majestic redwoods. Working through a 'forever house' program required multiple schematic design options (including a tear down) and eventually landed on remoding the house and adding a 750 SF pool house with all the adjacent amenities: infinity pool, sauna, teak hot tub, large outdoor entertainment space, bocce court, ping pong and a mediterranean inspired, fire resilient garden to tie it all together. Sustainable features include a net zero house powered by a 22 KW solar array with battery back up (the house is in a WUI zone and power grid shut down is common), radiant heating, mini split air conditioning in key spaces, reclaimed redwood decking and vertical grain doug fir (from northern CA), hybrid pool heater (choose between electric and gas heating options). The project is WUI compliant. The client LOVES basalt rip-rap - which was used extensively throughout the site for both decorative and functional uses: swales, retaining walls, sculptural features. We worked closely with Daniel Nolan to weave a drought tolerant, sophisticated plant palette into a 1 acre garden paradise around the house. We worked with Saturn Construction to establish a Japandi Norcali vibe in the pool house (limestone and oak plank floors, rice hull plaster walls and reclaimed vertical grain doug fir cabinets and ceilings and extended that vibe into the main house while keeping the vintage spatial volumes. The project is in the last phase of construction (completion scheduled for summer 2025) and will include a music room, home office, and a Glenn Murcutt-inspired carport. • GALVANIZE CAFÉ | Studio BBA Architects | Studio BBA Architects

SAN FRANCISCO | Master List - GALVANIZE CAFÉ GALVANIZE CAFÉ SAN FRANCISCO A welcoming, sophisticated hub of connection, the Galvanize café/bar and reception areas provide space for their members and strategic partners to intermingle with the public, for informal collaborations, community gatherings and chance meetings. Studio BBA designed the environment as a modern, refined presence in the midst of a well-kept warehouse shell, with white-washed white oak floors and counters, indigo-dyed solid oak panels and natural steel. The super-sized parallelogram bar acts as a frame for the lobby’s open space and engages with the casual seating areas, while maximizing customer flow and providing ample barista stations. To maintain a reference to the building’s past industrial use, we created a family of custom metal hardware components for the café table legs and bar supports. Other, more subtle, details also reference the pre-existing character, such as the bar’s countersunk screws patterned like rivets—but executed with an elegant brass finish in keeping with the new, clean aesthetic. A large custom, chevron-shaped communal stone sink accommodates accessibility requirements in the washroom, anchoring the space. • CLEVER HQ | Studio BBA Architects | Studio BBA Architects

SAN FRANCISCO | Master List - CLEVER HQ CLEVER HQ SAN FRANCISCO Occupying a 1924 poured-in-place concrete building, Clever’s new offices span nearly 27,000 sq. ft. across 4 floors and a roof deck. Studio BBA was hired for a full range of interior architecture and design services to convert this former mannequin factory into a tech company headquarters. We made two main architectural moves: “the Clever wall’ and a new stair. The Clever wall is a 160-foot long, maple plywood cabinetry array that extends the length of the building, incorporating the reception desk, a standing-height meeting table, seating nooks, storage, display and freestanding furnishings. The new stair sits inside a chevron-shaped opening, featuring walnut perches at each floor to encourage ad hoc staff interaction and offer a casual, standing-height workspace alternative. Clever builds software for schools, which fueled a robust play on iconic scholastic environments as we selected and curated the furnishings, art and accessories. Working closely with our client, we themed over thirty meeting rooms, phone booths and lounges—from chemistry lab, to student union to Principal’s office—enriching the design with molecule-inspired light fixtures and carpet, and custom installations using vintage and new school supplies. • FOUNDER'S INC. | Studio BBA Architects | Studio BBA Architects

SAN FRANCISCO | Master List - FOUNDER'S INC. FOUNDER'S INC. SAN FRANCISCO When we first met Founder’s Inc founder, they said after their successes as a tech entrepreneur, they can live and work anywhere in the world. When faced with the question of where–on the water in Fort Mason was the response. The National Historic Landmark of Fort Mason serves as a community cultural center and office space for non-profit organizations ranging from theaters and art galleries to environmental advocacy groups. While not technically a non-profit, Founder’s Inc is a tech incubator space that shares a non-profit equivalent agenda. They are committed to education and training, providing scholarships, mentorship, and a robust lecture series to supporting people to launch startups in the hardware and product space. Working inside a National Historic Landmark, Studio BBA had to use a delicate touch with design insertions to respect the historic building. The vaulted ceilings on the top floor lends itself to the public facing uses, but provided equal challenges to provide acoustic comfort for day-to-day and large events. Working closely with Founder’s, Studio BBA established a program anticipating the needs of the incubator and future proofing while ensuring the space feels great for 2 or 100+ people. The incubator includes a variety of makerspaces including a machine and electronics shop, a library for quiet heads down research, and a podcast studio. Back to Projects page Client Founder's Inc. • STRIPE - CHINA BASIN | Studio BBA Architects | Studio BBA Architects

SAN FRANCISCO | Master List - STRIPE - CHINA BASIN STRIPE - CHINA BASIN SAN FRANCISCO Casual, human-scaled, residential-style workspaces are key design elements that have shaped the work we have done with Stripe over the last three years – such as their former HQ at the Pioneer Trunk Factory – where the historic timber building played a key role in their aesthetics and culture. Fast forward to 2016, their rapid growth (a unicorn in tech) demanded much larger space. We provided property evaluation services during the long and arduous search, culminating in one of the largest lease deals of the year – 300,000 SF on Townsend Street – in an entitled, but not yet built space that was two years out (had not even broken ground when they signed the lease). Unable to stay at the beloved HQ during this two-year period, they subleased a space at China Basin from the previous tenant, Dropbox HQ – a space we designed in 2013 – for an interim move. Given our insights into Stripe’s culture and the desire to make their interim transition as smooth as possible, they engaged us to re-design Dropbox’s 105,000 SF. We kept many of the well-appointed design elements (solid walnut paneling, copper bars, commercial kitchen) at the same time transforming the context from boastful masculine to gender fluid and achieve a holistic feel with an artful combination of new, old and inherited. To humanize the huge, 85,000 SF 4th floor, we introduced three new thresholds that are abstractions of money – barter, coin, and digital. In addition to the thresholds, we humanized the space by creating residential-scaled nooks and break out spaces for small group collaborations. Via complete architecture and interior design services including programming, FFE and sourcing and curation of art and accessories, we created a Stripe culture. Examples of this include meeting rooms furnished with sofas, armchairs, end tables and lamps, and tactile finishes, new light fixtures and a warm color palette (versus table and chairs, one accent wall and overhead lighting). The artwork for each area is themed with a different animal—yes there’s a skunk and a sloth. And Stripe amiably insisted on bringing the hanging globe sculpture that Studio BBA staff handmade for the former HQ, which now lights their new library. For companies at this stage of rapid growth, there are fundamental design challenges to balance caution and budget-conscious thinking with the founding freedom and energy. We were able to help Stripe make this transition gracefully by using resourceful design strategies to successfully translate their core culture values into an interim space, all within a tight budget and a compressed schedule. To support the future evolution of Stripe’s human centered environment, we implemented a series of Beta tests (to be used in the Townsend space) such as mobile teleconferencing, genius bar for IT support, and circadian rhythm lighting for the open office areas. • THUMBTACK LIBRARY | Studio BBA Architects | Studio BBA Architects

SOMA, SAN FRANCISCO | Master List - THUMBTACK LIBRARY THUMBTACK LIBRARY SOMA, SAN FRANCISCO The Thumbtack Library showcases the relationship of trust fostered between the client and Studio BBA. As a 5x repeat client, we were so excited to collaborate and experiment with Thumbtack as we all tackled the future of workplace in the middle of a pandemic. During the pandemic, Thumbtack made the decision to become an all-virtual company. Instead of traditional offices, they created a plan for four “libraries” across the globe for socializing, gathering and connection. With this directive, we’ve created something entirely new. Libraries are strategically located as a resource to employees globally to allow for connections, community and socializing in-real-life. This partnership resulted in a truly iterative process upheld by the strong ethos of Thumbtack’s Head of People and a committed and supportive Landlord team. Thumbtack is evolving and transforming, and their new space reflects that, meeting them in their commitment to equity. The library is not a one solution fits all. By creating a spectrum of places, the library offers neighborhoods from noisy and extroverted, to quiet and pensive. Spaces support independent laptop work, but also phone booths for private calls, or high-back feet-up lounge chairs for soaking in the view while thinking. Other experiments in the office include providing phone booths large enough to act as offices for acoustic privacy for executives and staff discussing confidential information.
