WEST SONOMA ADU

WEST SONOMA COUNTY

A project in progress in West Sonoma County.

Nestled among a native oak woodland on a shared family property in Sebastopol, this compact ADU is a cozy home oriented to face views of the rolling Sonoma hills. At under 1,200 square feet, everything has its place and its purpose.

The long, linear form settles naturally into the hillside, providing a series of gathering spaces throughout, both indoors and comfortably beneath the sloped roof overhang. At each end of the home are flexible family spaces, with carriage doors and floor-to-ceiling sliding doors that open fully onto gravel courts and flagstone patios, seamlessly connecting to the surrounding landscape.

At the heart of the home, the light-filled kitchen is fully open to living spaces on either side — an invitation to gather around the act of cooking. Wood walls and ceilings bring warmth to the concrete floors below, with pops of color in the kitchen cabinets and backsplash tile. A simple material palette, quietly at home in the Northern California countryside.
